How to remove iMac stand

I tried to search for how to on YouTube about removing iMac stand this morning. I used words "take iMac stand off", "iMac stand removal", and iMac stand removing"(some of them are from hind while typing iMac stand... in search text box). To my surprise, I could not find any contribute about this issue. I then tried to do search on Google, still no luck.

I thought that there must be a way to remove it out easily since I saw all the iMac has a slot on back for wall mounting. Then I searched for "iMac wall mount" on Google. Soon I found the following result:

This how to is actually for mounting kit for 24" Apple LED Cinema Monitor. I think all the iMac computers should be in the same structure in their stand. The structure of stand is very small and clean. I'll take my current iMac on travel with stand off so that it can be easily packed to my carry on bag.

Thanks, your video has been helpful. For the imac 27 is the same system?

Yes. it is the same way for iMac 27. I just opened it and saw the screws. To reveal the screws, actually, you don't need to let the monitor down on a table. Let it stand and try to use a card to push the click in the upside. You should be able to feel it. I may make a Youtube show on this.

You've made a video of how to remove stand of the iMac 27?

Hi there,

great video. I tried with a slim credit card to feel for the lack on the hinge of the stand on my 21" iMac, but could not find it. Is it possible to remove the stand on the 21" iMac?

thanks D

Hi, was it a 21 inch or 27 one?

To put the stand back, follow the same instruction. Put on the screws on first. Use a strong card to push the spring clip back. I may not easy to find it. Just try it many times and then push it back.

I have made a view as well, but no time to upload to my channel. I'll try to get it available soon.

Just followed through on this on a 24" iMac from 2009. A thin plastic card worked fine for me, no $30 Access Tool needed.

I lay it face down on a flat bed, lifted the stand towards me as far as it would go, slid the card in till I heard the latch click, held the card in place and then tilted the stand back the other way until I could see the screws. Its important to understand that the latch is a thin strip of metal running along the very top edge of the opening. This is what the edge of your card is actually hitting, and you can see it with a good flashlight. To put the stand back on, it is essential to expose the screws as much as possible so that your card can hit the latch without being misguided by the stand. Slide your card back in, keeping it as tight to the top edge of the opening as possible, and you should hit the latch. Be patient, it may not happen on the first try! When you hear the click, carefully lift the stand back to its upright position while holding the card in place. Worked great for me!

I just bought a 27" imac...I'd like it to be lower, closer to the table...

1) can I replace the 27" stand with a shorter one?...which?

2) Could I remove the stand have it sit on 2 or 3 book stands (bigger, thicker, deeper) so the mac is only perhaps an inch instead of 4-5" off the table?

Hi...

Can this procedure be applied for the imac 21.5 ? I'm moving and I really wanted to take it with me on the plane in a hand luggage...
Many thanks...

Hi Mauricio, Did you manage to take the stand off of your imac 21.5. I am trying but I have not been able. Does anyone knows how to do it?

I will be trying on a 21.5" again today. Yesterday I could not but I'm brining a flashlight and a stronger card with me.

When I put in the card (standing or laying iMac) the screws are not revealed. I don't feel a click at all.
Does anyone know what to do?

We have a 21.5 and had purchased a stand through a company online. When we told them we could not get the stand off our Mac they researched the model. They said there is no way to take the stand off the 21.5 inch iMac. Since we tried several times over a period of a few weeks without success we decided they must be right. We are getting a refund on the stand. If you find you can get it off we'd like to know how you did it!

PS. We never felt or heard a click either, no matter how hard we pushed the "credit card" into the slot.

I'm fortunate enough to have in my home two iMacs: a 2008 vintage 20" iMac and a 2010 27" iMac. The credit card technique works on the 27" and also the 24" iMac. The 21.5" iMacs are related construction to my 20" iMac.

I just took off the stand from my 20" iMac so that it will fit under my upper kitchen cabinets while sitting on the counter. The procedure involves opening up the iMac, following the instructions to replace a hard disk on ifixit.com, unscrewing at least part of the motherboard and lifting it away from the hinge spring, undoing the 8 Torx screws and then taking off the stand. It takes over 2 hours to do so, and voids your warranty if one is in effect.

Hi, I've been trying this for an hour on my 2009 24 inch imac, but I can't get a credit card into the slot at the top of the stand, it's just too narrow! I barely managed a business card, sort of felt the latch, but the card bent immediately.
